I received the most beautiful and fragrant arrangement of roses the other day. At first glance, they looked like Peonies, but the deep rose scent indicated otherwise. I sleuthed for them online and uncovered my new obsession: Cabbage Roses.

I have these fuchsia and orange beauties on my desk. They are truly the most unique color combination I have ever seen.

Probably a very pricey bouquet, but good god, it's beautiful. Imagine a lush combination of cabbage roses, peonies and ranunculus.

Apple Picking!

Tomorrow I'm taking a much-needed break from the city and heading off to Stone Ridge Orchard to do some apple picking.

I'm not usually one for over-the-top nautical, but I am one for over-the-top luxe private clubs. The New York Yacht Club blew me away with it's borderline gaudy, but totally amazing decor. You know how a typical east-coast preppy guy look can feel outdated and stiff but an overblown self-consciously outdated preppy look (full seersucker, spectators, horn-rimmed glasses etc...) can just win you over with it's posh insanity? That's how I feel about the club.

These are supposed to mimic the windows on a large ship - they kind of remind me of something from Peter Pan.

It's hard to believe this is in a Manhattan building. The woodwork is spectacular.

That fireplace. I've never seen anything like it. It seems to grow upwards into a crown, or tentacles...

This is the picture that did it for me. I love this room. It's crazy, but really enchanting. This "Model Room" houses the world's largest collection of full- and half-hull models.

Pleat-Front Pants

I used to rail against pleat-front anything - men's pants, ladies pants, skirts - you name it. I've definitely come around and I'm hunting for the perfect pair (or pairs) of pleat-front pants. But it can be a tricky proposition, the waistband must fit perfectly (ill-fitting baggy and pleated is a recipe for oddly fat looking thighs), the fabric must drape nicely and there can't be any crazy embellishment.

These remind me vaguely of great Colonial-era jodhpurs (without the insane thigh bulge). They pouf just perfectly above the knee in a great, soft gather.

The cropped pant tends towards casual, but worn with stellar heels these would look dramatic and definitely dressy.

This is the quintessential golf short that is probably the root of my fear of pleats. Typically, I see these on people who actually fill out the pleats as if they were added to accommodate extra body mass so you don't have to size up. Incorrect. Everyone at the magazine seems to have one of these brilliant little charm-holder pendants. These simple pieces (please stay away from the gaudy dolphin or grandma themed versions) are a refined way to wear more than one pendant at once. Plus, I wouldn't mind an excuse to start buying a few gold charms here and there.

Cross Stitch

I learned to cross stitch from my grandma when I was really little and have been doing it ever since. I stay miles away from the typical cute samplers and tend to gravitate towards elegant, antique looking patterns or really unconventional applications. One of my most recent projects came as I was decorating the bedroom of our new apartment and decided we needed throw pillows everywhere.

I found some amazing striped silk at a discount fabric store (it sells remnants by the pound!) and decided it needed a monogram. I taped the cross stitch fabric to the inside of the pillowcase and stitched following the grid through both layers of fabric. It was far more time-consuming than a normal pattern because I couldn't see the grid from the fabric side (it was a lot of flipping back and forth for each stitch), but I think it was more than worth it in the end.

The finished product. That's my initial and the boyfriend's interlaced in the center.

This is one of the most unique bookshelves I've ever seen with the books brilliantly nestled under each stair riser. It might be a look that is hard to pull off in many traditional homes, but I can think of some tight Manhattan spaces that could use this ingenuity.

Those three words sum up what I'd like to surround myself with at home. Every time I see these pictures, they make me happy...and make me want to run home and put a beautiful pastel wash on my stark white rental apartment walls.

The soft hues of this room are grounded by such a vibrant rug.

This robin's egg blue is brilliant. It would be so easy for it to seem childish, but mixed with so many other similarly sprightly colors and handsome finishes (that fireplace, the chandelier!) it is fun but grown-up.

I must have floor to ceiling elly green velvet drapes. Immediately.

I have several fire-redheaded friends and the cardinal rule is to never wear pink, right? Somehow the combination here is delightfully jarring and totally works. And the collage of framed art and zebra doors? I die.

None of the pieces in this room seem to really match, but the odd mix manages to be cohesive. The blue wall (I really must have a thing for this color) stands out above everything else and lets all of the similarly muted yet disparate pieces pale and coalesce in comparison.

Pink and purple and blue and green - sounds like a 5-year-old's dream room. Here, it's looks like a pastel jewel box made for a modern Marie Antoinette. I would probably add a carpet here though, as beautiful as those dark wood floors are.

Those windows! The art! That chandelier! It's quite interesting how the eye seems to dance around the top of the room before it ever notices the furniture. Stunning.

I really am a sucker for built-ins, and the wall of dark wood is just lovely. And really, I think it's the green garden stool that makes this room for me. Without it, it would be a dark couch against a dark wall. Amazing what one pop of color can do.

Exotic room

I was feeling inspired by Tony Duquette's over-the-top exotic rooms and decided to try to conjure one of my own. I'm feeling the need for a lot of color, texture and pattern with a few more modern pieces to keep it playful.

I've long had a fascination with cork wallpaper. Not the thick chunks that used to line walls in the 70's, but thin paper-like sheets with interesting colors peeking through the crevices - or, better yet, a metallic bronze twinkling just enough to keep it from feeling too rustic.

But I am also in love with all things Gracie - this hand-painted wallpaper is decadently beautiful (and expensive), and I might have to sideline the cork dreams for this. An entire room wrapped in this orange would feel just magical.

This carpet is totally '80s Dynasty and borderline ugly, but I think the bold emerald is fabulous (especially against a dark wood herringbone floor...sigh) and it is such a good quality piece that it will fall into the kitschy-cool category rather than the kitschy-crappy one. Stuffed with pillows draped with fabric, this wedding bed becomes like a hidden cocoon, a room within a room. I always wanted one of these for my bed when I was a little kid in Singapore and now I feel like it would still be the coolest addition to my grown-up living room.

This table is intricately carved and totally unique - the little drawers open all the way around and are the perfect totally decadent place to hide keys, sunglasses, you name it.

I would pair these two tray tables side by side as an oddly paired coffee table or flanking the sofa as playfully mis-matched, but stylistically similar pieces. The python piece seems to define 'exotic' and would be great as extra seating and the vibrant lacquer adds a nice modern punch to the room.

Ikat is madly trendy right now (actually, it may be waning...), but I think used well, this fabric is a luxurious staple that never goes out of style. Usually when I think of balloons, I think of cheap prom decorations, little-kid birthdays and otherwise too-juvenile-to-be-cool situations. But these two pictures enthrall me. They are playful but still sophisticated enough to fly for a grown-up party.

The haphazard strands of every possible color have a rather magical quality - though I'm sure the stately old manor helps. Imagine an outdoor party with amorphous pillars of balloons delineating the space. Enchanting.

For a beautiful outdoor wedding - drape the ceremony site in beautiful white fabric suspended by giant balloons. Could be logistically tricky, but the effect is so whimsical and beautiful.

Betty Sherrill's NYC apartment

Betty Sherrill's NYC duplex has just the right amount of chintzy fluff to make it stately, but the unexpectedly bright colors and mix of patterns and finishes make it perfectly eclectic. This top interior designer's apartment feels curated rather than decorated and has stood the test of time - it hasn't been re-done in more than 40 years!

Mrs. Sherrill in her living room. The angular red table is an ideal counterpoint to the soft lines and flounce around it.

My eye is immediately caught by the painting over the fireplace. I was expecting an idyllic pastoral scene in oils, but love the abstract piece instead (still in a gold frame, natch).

Love the zebra chairs and the Impala bust - this room has an UES meets safari feel.

Cluttered, but in the best way possible.

The subtly patterned wallpaper adds just enough interest to this hall without being overwhelming.

Fully feminine and sweet (I still love pink walls), but probably not a look my better half would go for in our bedroom.

I used to look at Edmund Dulac's illustrations in my copy of his Fairy Book when I was little. Dulac was a prolific French illustrator during the 'Golden Age of Illustration' (the first quarter of the 20th century). I just love how detailed and dreamy and romantic these are. So today is my birthday, the not-so-big two-three, and I let myself have some fun with a fantasy wish-list. I'm hoping to add these goodies to my repertoire as I get up there in age and salary.

It's not really a celebration without a bottle of Veuve.

I love that this LV cashmere leopard stole can look formal for cocktails or casual coiled around the neck with jeans.

My friend Diana, in her infinite style wisdom, bought the Goyard St. Louis in white. I wasn't sure I was into Goyard, and especially not in white, but she made me a quick convert.

I've had a love-affair with the Fendi mini spy bag for years (especially in the light tan color), it's not as prevalent as its full-sized cousin but is still amazingly textural and unique.

When the BF and I were prepping for the big move to NYC, I had my heart set on a steamer trunk as a coffee table. Unfortunately, that didn't materialize and now my taste has upgraded, specifically to a vintage LV steamer trunk. Bonus points if it happens to have my monogram.

The most affordable item on my list - I have fantasies of taking amazing, moody, beautiful pictures with this Diana camera and displaying them in tiny frames on my wall.

One of my girlfriends wore the most amazing pair of high-heeled oxfords on a trip to, yes, Oxford, with her boyfriend and looked incredibly chic. I'll wear this D&G pair with wool tights in the winter and rolled-up-to-the-ankle khakis in the summer.

I'm quite tiny and long-waisted, so finding a classic white blouse (or any blouse) that fits me well has thus-far escaped me. Skinny fit Polo oxfords are about as close as I've gotten, but they still miss the mark. I can't wait to get a few amazing bespoke shirts that will last forever.

Sleek black pumps - high heels, not-too-pointy toe, leather. I die when I imagine these with dark skinny jeans and my future bespoke shirt.

Maybe it's the dominatrix in me, but I love boots and particularly crave a slim-cut, knee-high black leather pair - one that's refined enough to keep it out of the sketchy porn-star realm.

Who doesn't want a few strands of Chanel pearls?

Custom riding boots. I'm really going through an equestrian-esque phase at the moment. I would love to wear these with black spandex, my white blouse and a great blazer...and to be totally over the top I'd sport a scarf around my neck. Ideally, it would read as Annie Hall meets National Velvet.

Not very original, but I'm a supporter of a few investment pieces rather than tons of costume jewelry. My parents gave me Mikimoto pearl studs for graduation and I haven't taken them off since, I don't think I'd schlep this around every day, but it would be the perfect addition for a night out.

On my recent vacation, the hubby and I took a cruise along the Dalmatian Coast - stopping in Croatia, Bosnia, Albania, Montenegro and Slovenia. The cruise was lovely, but the ship left quite a bit to be desired (I believe they told us it was a refurbished 1965 Soviet vessel...you get the idea). So we decided one day we'll just have to charter our own private yacht (fingers crossed), and hopefully it will look something like these gems:

I usually don't like modern, but if you have a high-tech, sleek yacht, it would be kind of odd to fill it with eclectic fluffy furniture, no? This clean room manages to fit the bill without feeling too cold.

Afghan War Rug

My mom collected antique Afghan war rugs like these when we were living in Singapore. For the most part they are wool, roughly woven, prayer rug sized pieces depicting images of conflict. The craft started during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in 1979 and continues until today with many rugs appearing on the market that reflect the current conflict with the US. Just one of these tiny rugs in a corner (yes, they are sturdily woven and meant to be walked all over) makes such an interesting statement and is an instant conversation piece.

These early, never-before-seen pictures of Marilyn Monroe really struck me. As a 24-year-old, she seems a bit more innocent, a bit less polished and a bit more real without her doe eye affectation. LIFE photographer Ed Clark took these photos in August 1950, but they were only recently uncovered as LIFE began to digitize its archives.

I am so intrigued by the cover of Julia Chaplin's new coffee table book Gypset Style (Gypset = Gypsy + Jet Set). It feels vaguely shabby chic, but easy on the shabby. The antique quilt, the dramatic curtains and of course, the bohemian darling draped over that gorgeous silk chair - it's all perfectly lived-in, but still decadent. And those vibrant blue trousers...to die for.

I saw these playful Nymphenburg bowls at Bergdorf the other weekend - I'm not sure how practical they are (maybe they would work with a bed of leaves and cubes of cheese or bunches of grapes), but I'm enamored nonetheless. It's an odd idea, but the incredible detail and impeccable quality makes these read as fine art rather than kitsch.

My grandma has a spectacular collection of silver napkin rings - not just the typical circles, but the most intricate and fanciful figures. I'm heading on vacation soon, for a (hopefully) sun-filled cruise on the Dalmatian Coast and I'm on the lookout for an amazing wide-brim hat. I'm becoming more and more paranoid about the sun and can't think of a better way to prevent wrinkles while looking stylish.

Kim Cattrall from the Sex and the City movie - the hat may be entirely over the top, but she is definitely my style inspiration for the hat quest.

The floppy, oversized look is just glamorous and the gathered brim is a really unique detail.

Arlo Weiner is only eight and has an insanely awesome fashion sense. Apparently he started dressing himself at three and is now a devotee of velvet blazers, ascots and madras. I started dressing myself when I was really little (and thankfully my parents let me), but my forays into underwear on my head and snow boots in summer never blossomed into something this cool.

"This is my favorite outfit. The tie is a regular tie, but I tied it like that because I’ve seen it done that way in old English movies. Even though the tie and the jacket are different colors, they’re both striped, so I thought they looked right together. And I wore the vest and pants together because they’re both shades of red."

Once I'm past the apartment living phase, I have this fantasy of living in a well-appointed home with a yard and an elegant conservatory. An indoor pool would be nice, but let's not get crazy here. I've seen a lot of options that look like odd, modern boxes that were randomly attached to otherwise beautiful houses, but these have real architectural élan (and a price tag to match, I'm sure).

Love, love these vines. This orangery has a distinct secret garden feel to it.

No need for something large--a small sun room with enough space for a breakfast table or a few overstuffed chairs is plenty.

They have a decidedly preppy-in-pearls feel, especially with the girly bow, but wrapped in leather they take on a whole new edgy, elegant air. Pink Walls

Maybe it's the rainy weather that's been plaguing New York for the past week, but I'm finding myself craving girly, happy pink walls. Our apartment is too small to go for it just yet, but when I have more than 500 square feet to decorate, I'm all over this.

Such a soft and dreamy room. Check out the ceiling--I would kill for that kind of architectural detail.

I feel like this room is straight from The Royal Tenenbaums. It's amazing how the rich wood and sea of framed art make the pink seem almost masculine, almost.

No, the walls aren't pink, but how amazing are these pink appliances? I think I'd be afraid to make such a color commitment, but the effect is so wonderful.
